About Hazel & Amara

Our founding story, mission, values, and governance credentials.

Founding story

Founded in 2022, from lived experience

Hazel & Amara Child Support Centre was founded in 2022 by two mothers whose own experience caring for children with cancer opened their eyes to the immense challenges faced by families affected by childhood chronic illness.

Mission

To provide holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based psychosocial support and family economic empowerment to children living with cancer, sickle cell disease, epilepsy, Type 1 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and congenital heart disease with a differentiated focus on adolescent disclosure support and caregiver economic empowerment for children affected by HIV/AIDS and to the families and caregivers who sustain them.

Vision

A Uganda in which no family is destroyed by a child's chronic illness.

Our values

What guides every decision we make

Child-Centredness

Every decision is assessed first against its impact on the child - dignity, wellbeing, and voice take precedence over convenience or preference.

Compassionate Professionalism

Warmth and empathy paired with rigour, evidence, and accountability - not in tension, both required.

Community Ownership

The families we serve are partners, not beneficiaries. Our role is to amplify their agency, not substitute our judgement for theirs.

Stewardship

Every shilling entrusted to us belongs to the children and families we serve, and is managed accordingly.

Family as the Unit of Healing

A caregiver's emotional and economic stability is inseparable from a child's recovery. We measure family-level outcomes, not just child-level outputs.

Radical Honesty

We report what is true, not what is flattering, and acknowledge failures as readily as successes.

Non-Discrimination

A child with epilepsy deserves the same quality of support as a child with cancer, regardless of condition, status, ethnicity, or religion.
